Accessibility

Hearth is a journal people reach for on bad days. That makes accessibility part of whether it works at all, not a finishing touch.

What we aim for

We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the web app, the marketing site, and the mobile apps. This statement covers usehearth.ink, app.usehearth.ink, the public AI Twin pages, and the iOS and Android apps.

What we have verified

• Text and muted text meet AA contrast (≥ 4.5:1) on every theme — computed per theme, not eyeballed.
• Every form field has an accessible name; keyboard focus is always visible.
• Dialogs are real modal dialogs: focus is trapped inside, the background is inert, Escape closes, and focus returns to whatever opened them.
• prefers-reduced-motion is honoured at the engine level — with it set, the mascot runs no animation loop at all, and still responds to the keyboard rather than going silent.
• Inkling, our companion character, is a real button: it works with Enter and Space and announces what it did through a polite live region.

Gaps we know about

Listed because a statement that claims everything is worth nothing:

• We have not completed a full screen-reader pass on real assistive technology (VoiceOver, NVDA, TalkBack). Our automated checks cover names, roles, focus and contrast — they do not cover how it all reads out loud.
• No independent third-party accessibility audit has been carried out yet.
• Some interface text has been machine-translated pending review by native speakers, which can affect clarity in languages other than English.
